How Does Digestion Works?

The human body is a combination of different systems which work in perfect harmony to make us the most advanced living creature on earth. These important systems can be classified as the cardiovascular system, the integumentary system, the musculoskeletal system, the lymphatic system, the nervous system, the gastrointestinal or digestive system, and the reproductive system. All these systems are independently responsible for all the essential functioning of the body. The Gastrointestinal system is particularly responsible for digesting food and producing energy which is essential for all the activities of life.

The gastrointestinal system is basically the part of the body which digests food. Gastrointestinal system is a long tube running right through the entire body with specialized and dedicated zones for performing various tasks. In an adult male human, the gastrointestinal tract is about 20 feet (5 metres) long or up to 30 feet (9 metres) long. The gastrointestinal system can be subdivided into the upper and lower tract. the embryological origin of each segment of gastrointestinal system can be divided into foregut, mid-gut and hindgut .
